Travelling to the Isle of Wight The Isle of Wight can be found off the centre of the south coast of England and various forms of ferry are available to cross the stretches of sea known as the Solent and Spithead. The distance between the island and the mainland varies between 3 and 5 miles. The island is serviced via the mainland ports of Portsmouth, Southampton and Lymington by vehicle ferries and high speed passenger catamarans and hovercraft. There are three major ferry operators and the details of how to contact them can be found below. The ports of Portsmouth and Southampton are both linked to London Waterloo station by a fast railway network and all three ports have excellent road links to the rest of the UK. The London airports of Heathrow and Gatwick are both approximately one and a half hours by road from the ferry ports, but visitors from Europe can fly to Southampton airport. The port of Southampton is then only a 20 minute taxi ride away from the airport.
